Discover The Different Opportunities Open To The Financial Graduate
Financial graduate opportunities are growing in number every year, despite the attractiveness of the careers and the prodigious competition. Although there are always a great many applicants for financial jobs, many of the applications will not have any serious chance of success. This is because finance is not a field where an employer will take a chance on someone who does not have the relevant paperwork, no matter how promising they may seem. There is too much at stake should they not adjust to the role quickly enough.
Opportunities for graduates themselves are tempered by the need for relevant experience. In some cases, this can be overlooked, as the new employee can be teamed with someone from the organization who can supply the relevant in house experience. For other jobs, experience will be so important that the employer will only promote from within, meaning that you will need to get a job with the same company at a lower level before you can hope to progress to where you want to be. This will only happen where there is a need for financial planning using internal systems.
There are a great many opportunities within the area of personal financial planning. The government is playing a smaller role than ever in helping people plan for their financial future and retirement, and this means people need to make their own arrangements. Most of these people will need advice, and this is where you can help them. If you can give genuine impartial advice, you will gain the confidence of your clients, who will have heard the stories of financial advisors who recommend products because of the higher commission, and not because they are what the client needs.
The other extremely common type of financial job graduates apply for is jobs in accountancy. These jobs involve accurately recoding figures which are then submitted to the regulatory authorities, and also circulated to senior management so that business choices can be made. Accountants are not involved in planning, they are there purely to keep records and provide accurate data. If you have a college degree which demonstrates your competence in this field, you should not need any relevant experience to get a job.
The type of job a financial graduate will find it hardest to get is one in financial planning within a company. The planners take on the opposite role from that of the accountants. They are the ones who deal with theoretical projections of the future. It is harder to break into these jobs because of the need for understanding of the internal company systems. Many employers will only fill these roles by promoting from within. If you have an ambition to work in this field, it will be just as important to get experience within the right company, as it will to become a financial graduate.
